Being found when the customer hasn't chosen a company

Copeland Home Services provides heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical services from Forney, Texas. When someone needs emergency AC repair, the useful question is who can help nearby.

Appear tracked local service questions such as who to call for emergency AC repair and which Forney contractor handles both HVAC and plumbing. The questions described the need without supplying Copeland's name.

Gemini named Copeland in 12 of 15 answers, up from 5. Perplexity also included its website in 8 of 16 recorded source lists, up from 2. The source lists differed in length, so that fourfold inclusion result is a separate measure from being named in an answer.

Across all four models, Copeland's name appeared in 28 of 62 matched answers, up from 18 initially. That is a 56% overall increase in named appearances. Three models named Copeland more often; OpenAI named it less often.

How we measured the change

The headline concerns named appearances in Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite answers. Its 15 matched questions produced 5 named appearances initially and 12 in the latest checks. Dividing 12 by 5 gives 2.4 times as many appearances, equivalent to a 140% relative increase. Initial Gemini checks ran from June 18 to August 17, 2026; latest checks ran from September 5 to 21.

The separate Perplexity result measures whether Copeland's website appeared in the source list returned with a Perplexity Sonar answer. We compared the same 16 questions and counted each list once when an exact Copeland website hostname appeared, regardless of the number of links. The count rose from 2 of 16 to 8 of 16, or 12.5% to 50%. Eight divided by two is four times as many source lists. Initial checks ran from April 21 to July 24, 2026; latest checks ran from September 5 to 21.

Five of the eight latest source lists also had a corresponding citation marker in the retained answer text; three had the website in the source list only. Earlier source records lacked the later citation classification, so the two initial website sources were manually verified against answer citation markers. Stored source lists differed in length, with a median of 8 sources initially and 20 later. This is not a fixed-size citation comparison. Source-list inclusion does not establish a named recommendation, a click or a consumer search impression.

We took all 16 local HVAC questions in Copeland's September monitoring set that did not name the company. Across four models, 62 question-and-model pairs had both an earlier answer and a September answer. Two pairs had no earlier answer and were excluded from both sides.

For each pair, we compared the earliest recorded answer before September with its latest September answer. Initial checks ran from March 20 to August 17, 2026; latest checks ran from September 5 to 21. Each pair counted once per period. The question text and recorded model matched on both sides.

We checked the retained answer text for Copeland's name and verified its longer trading-name aliases. Website citations alone did not count as named appearances. The rate changed from 18 of 62 to 28 of 62, or 29.0% to 45.2%. That is a 16.1 percentage-point change and a 55.6% relative increase, rounded to 56%.

These are historical API model observations on selected questions, not actual homeowner searches or consumer-app sessions. Some answers were truncated when stored. The comparison documents an observed change; it does not measure leads or revenue or establish that Appear caused the increase.
