AI search troubleshooting

Why isn't my business showing up in ChatGPT?

You ask ChatGPT for businesses like yours and see competitors. Before changing your website, save that answer. The wording, sources, location, and search setting give you something specific to investigate.

This guide is a diagnostic process. It cannot reveal ChatGPT's internal ranking decisions. It helps you separate problems you can verify from guesses about why one response omitted your business.

First, make the test reproducible

Save the exact question, date, product or model, whether web search was used, and the visible answer with its sources. Record relevant location or conversation context. Use a fresh conversation when you want to reduce the influence of earlier messages.

Compare a question a real customer might ask with a separate question about your brand. If you supply the company name, the response repeating it is not evidence that a buyer would discover you.

Repeat checks over time and keep unfavourable results. One response is a useful example, but it should not become a permanent visibility score.

  • Discovery test. Ask for a provider that meets a genuine need in your actual market, without naming your business.
  • Accuracy test. Ask about your named business and check the facts against your approved public information.
  • Direct-page test. Provide a URL to inspect whether the assistant can use that page. Record this separately because you supplied the source.

Check whether the business fits the request

Read the answer and ask why the returned businesses might qualify. Does the question specify a city, budget, qualification, integration, service, or type of customer that your website does not support?

If your business does not meet the requirement, the omission may be appropriate. If it does, locate the public page that proves it. Your internal knowledge of the offer cannot substitute for information a buyer can inspect.

For a local service, check that the actual service area and relevant work are clear. For software, check the named use case, integration details, and limitations. Do not invent coverage or capabilities to match a question.

Check search access without changing your training policy blindly

OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, which supports search discovery, from GPTBot, which relates to potential model training. Their controls are independent. Review the policy for the crawler relevant to your goal.

Ask your website manager to check robots rules and firewall handling against OpenAI's current documentation. Inspect failures on the specific pages you want discovered. A browser test alone cannot establish what a verified crawler receives.

Keep the change narrow and verify it afterwards. Allowing a crawler is an access decision, not a guarantee that your business will be recommended.

Check what the relevant page actually says

Read it as someone unfamiliar with your business. Can you find the service or product, customer fit, location if relevant, qualifications, and next step? Check whether your trading name and website match the identity used elsewhere.

A page can contain many words without answering the buying question. Replace general claims such as quality service with a clear explanation of the work, relevant conditions, and evidence.

Improve the existing page when it is the right home for the answer. Create a separate guide or comparison when the need is distinct. Avoid publishing several pages that repeat the same answer with slightly different question wording.

Inspect the sources that the answer used

Open the cited sources and check what information they contain. A competitor's appearance might be associated with a useful service page, an independent review, a directory profile, or another source. Record the actual source rather than assuming the assistant relied on the competitor's homepage.

If a profile you control contains an old address or category, correct it through the normal process. If an independent publisher has inaccurate information, use its correction channel. Focus on legitimate, relevant evidence.

Do not buy invented mentions or create fake reviews. The task is to make truthful information easier to verify, including on sources your prospective customers already use.

Choose a fix that matches the finding

Write a short diagnosis before commissioning work. Include the original question, observed problem, supporting evidence, and proposed change. Assign one person to verify that the change reaches the live page.

  • Access failure. Resolve the documented block or error and repeat the affected request.
  • Incorrect fact. Correct the authoritative business information and the pages or profiles that repeat it.
  • Missing useful answer. Add supported detail to the relevant page or publish a distinct resource.
  • No clear explanation. Keep measuring and investigate further. More publishing is not a diagnosis.

Recheck the answer and the business outcome separately

After the change, repeat the original question under comparable conditions and retain the new answer. Check whether your business is named, whether a citation supports the claim, and whether the response recommends you for the right reason.

Also review visits and qualified enquiries through your existing analytics and sales records. A changed answer does not establish a changed sales result. There is no guaranteed deadline by which a website edit will produce a recommendation.

Appear's free scan can help you begin with technical access and the first HTML response. Use it alongside the question and source review above. A technical readiness score is not a measurement of your presence in ChatGPT answers.

Common questions

Can I pay to guarantee an organic ChatGPT recommendation?

This guide provides no basis for such a guarantee. Ask any provider making that promise to explain exactly what placement, product, and evidence it means. Treat an organic recommendation claim separately from a paid advertising offer.

Does blocking GPTBot mean I have blocked ChatGPT search?

OpenAI documents separate controls for GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot. Review the search crawler rules and network access specifically. Do not infer search access from the training crawler setting alone.

Why does ChatGPT know my name but not recommend me?

A response to a named-brand question tests a different task from discovering suitable providers. Investigate the actual buyer question, your fit, and the sources available for that question.

Will publishing more articles solve it?

Only if missing useful information is the relevant problem. An access failure, incorrect business fact, or unsuitable offer requires a different action.

Start with your website. Check what its first response makes available to crawlers, then use the findings to choose your next fix.
